Shandong nuclear plant to open in 2016
<span style="white-space:normal;">A nuclear power project in eastern China's Shandong is expected to go into operation in 2016, the local power company said on August 26.</span><br />
The conventional islands of the first phase project, located in the city of Haiyang, are being installed and are expected to be put into use in two years, according to Yantai State Grid Corporation. A conventional island contains equipment which changes steam heat into electricity.<br />
The Haiyang Nuclear Station, with a total investment of 80 billion yuan ($13 billion), will eventually have six reactor units by 2020.<br />
The first phase includes two AP1000 reactor units with capacity of 1.25 GW each. The plan for the second phase project includes another two units of the same capacity, which are awaiting approval from the National Development and Reform Commission.<br />

By 2013, Haiyang city had an installed power capacity of 8.02 GW, with new energy including wind, solar and biomass contributing 17.1%.
