The coal industry in Shanxi suffered a slump in profit generated in 2013, owing to sluggish demand and low prices, despite supportive measures taken by the provincial government.
In 2013, the Shanxi Coal industry realized profit of 23.23 billion yuan, plunging 55.37% from a year ago, according to data released by the Department of Shanxi Coal Industry.
Total revenue in the sector reached 402.4 billion yuan, down 0.57% year on year, while taxes and fees submitted to the government reached nearly 115 billion yuan, down 12.42% year on year, data showed.
The province produced 960 million tonnes of coal last year, a growth rate of 5.3% year on year, while the volume of coal sold out of the province reached 620 million tonnes, up 5.88% year on year.
To help struggling miners combat with the sluggish market, the provincial government in late July unveiled 20 supportive measures including stopping collecting mine transformation fund (5 yuan/t) and mine environment recovery fund (10 yuan/t), and vowed to further cut administrative charges and eliminate illegal fees and taxes.
