China has cut on-grid wind power prices by 0.02 yuan/KWh for onshore wind farm projects approved after the end of last year and those approved before but commissioned after January 1 , 2016, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said in a recent document.

The prices in three regions with the richest wind resources – in the northern, northwest and northeast – will be cut to 0.49 yuan ($0.079), 0.52 yuan and 0.56 yuan per KWh, respectively, according to the NDRC.

It is half the 0.04 yuan cut proposed in a draft for public opinions in September.

But the tariff in low wind resource region will stay unchanged at 0.61 yuan/KWh, compared to a 0.02 yuan cut proposed earlier.

The NDRC document also rules that the tariff will be paid by two sources. The part of the wind price that is compatible with the rates for local coal-fired power will be paid by the local provincial grid operator. The remainder will be paid by the national renewable energy development fund.

It is the first adjustment in wind power prices since the government introduced subsidized tariffs in 2009 to spur development of wind farms as part of efforts to combat chronic air pollution from coal consumption in many mainland cities.
