China, the world’s largest energy consumer, is on track to surpass its 2014 target for reducing the energy intensity of its economy, state media Xinhua news agency reported, citing an official from the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).
China is set to cut energy intensity by 4.7% in 2014 compared to last year, Xie Zhenhua, vice director of the NDRC said on Wednesday during a low carbon development forum in Beijing.
Officials on the forum said China has cut outdated production capacity by 75 million tonnes in the steel sector and 570 million tonnes of cement over the past three years.
China will pursue further elimination of outdated capacity to achieve the goal of reducing energy intensity to 16% below 2010 levels by 2015.
