Chinese Premier Li Keqiang urged further work on saving energy and reducing emissions to help realize this year’s energy cut target, according to a official statement released late last week.

To cut energy consumption per GDP by more than 3.9%, China needs to further optimize the industrial structure and implement energy-saving technology, Li said in a meeting of energy saving and emission reduction.

Environmental work and economic expansion shall be coordinated because reducing production capacity creates huge business potential for new, green industries, Li said.

Li said, China would actively develop clean energy like wind power, nuclear power, hydropower and photovoltaic power generation and energy saving industries in 2014.

China’s energy consumption per GDP dropped respectively 2.01%, 3.6% and 3.7 % in 2011, 2012 and 2013. In order to reach the 16% target during the 12th Five-Year Period (2011-2015), China has to slash 3.9% of energy consumption per unit in both 2014 and 2015.

Li said, China will continue Improving the proportion of service industry in the national economy, to ensure it exceed the secondary industry this year, so as to promote industrial structure optimization, energy conservation and emissions reduction.

In 2013, the added value of service industry occupied 46.1% of the economy, increasing by 1.5 percentage points, which was the first time that the added value of tertiary industry surpassed that of the secondary industry.
