China is planning to build 12 trans-regional power transmission lines to help transmit electricity from resource-rich provinces to smog-hit eastern and central areas, the State Grid said on February 26.

The proposals have been submitted to the National Energy Administration (NEA), said Zhang Zhengling, vice director of the development and planning division of the State Grid.

Under the plan, the first batch of lines will be completed finished in 2016. Eleven of the 12 lines will be built by the State Grid, one of the two grid giants in China, said Zhang.

That included 4 ultra-high voltage (UHV) DC transmission lines, 4 UHV AC transmission lines and 3 high voltage lines of 500kv. One of the UHV DC transmission line from eastern Ningxia to Zhejiang has got approval to start the early stage work.

In 2014, the NEA will focus on the construction of long-distance power transmission lines and UHV AC/DC lines so as to prompt power transmission from coal-rich Inner Mongolia and Shanxi provinces to user areas.

Earlier this month, a State Council executive meeting included trans-regional electricity transmission in its policy package targeting air pollution.
