Shanxi coal industry performance in 2013

The latest official data showed that Shanxi’s raw coal output increased 5.32% year on year to 963.57 million tonnes in 2013.

Coal Production
Data from the Shanxi coal industry Department showed that raw coal production in Shanxi reached 92.72 million tonnes in December, growing 6.26% from the month before and 12.35% from the previous year.

During the same month, the key state-owned mines produced 62.34 million tonnes of coal, up 3.83% month on month and 13.46% year on year, while the local mines produced 30.38 million tonnes of coal, increasing 11.61% month on month but up 10.13% year on year.

As a result, Shanxi produced a total of 963.57 million tonnes of coal in 2013, an increase of 5.32% year on year. From January to December, the key state-owned and local mines produced 670.39 million and 292.18 million tonnes of coal, growing 5.12% and 5.79% year on year respectively.

Coal Transport
Shanxi transported a total of 60.09 million tonnes of coal to the outside in December, rising 12.78% month on month and 13.72% year on year, 52.12% of which or 31.32 million tonnes were from key state-owned mines. Total outbound transport during 2013 reached 615.95 million tonnes, up 5.88% year on year, 57.01% of which or 351.17 million tonnes were from key state-owned mines.

The outbound rail haulage in December stood at 45.27 million tonnes, growing 8.87% month on month and 12.01% year on year; the total outbound rail shipment during the whole year amounted to 477.41 million tonnes, up 2.71% year on year.

The key state-owned mines railed 28.67 million tonnes of coal to the outside in December, up 0.42% month on month and 4.71% year on year, and 329.48 million tonnes in 2013, up 5.87% year on year. Local mines transported 16.60 million tonnes of coal to the outside in December, up 27.40% month on month and 27.34% year on year, and 147.94 million tonnes in 2013, down 3.68% year on year.

In terms of industry, 329.92 million tonnes of coal was railed to power plants in other provinces during 2013, up 2.89% year on year; 61.50 million tonnes to the metallurgical industry, up 7.13% year on year; 36.73 million tonnes to the chemical industry, decreasing 7.35% year on year.

Meanwhile, the outbound coal truckings rose 18.48% year on year to 138.53 million tonnes in 2013, 15.66% of which or 21.69 million tonnes was from key state-owned mines. In December, the volume of coal trucked to the outside amounted to 14.82 million tonnes, up 26.67% from the previous month and 19.27% from the year before.

Coal Stocks
As of the end of December, Shanxi wide coal mines had 39.65 million tonnes of coal in stock, up 1.38% month on month and 20.05% from the beginning of the year. coal stocks of key state-owned mines stood at 9.85 million tonnes, up 2.50% month on month and 41.07% from the beginning of 2013, while that of local mines stood at 29.80 million tonnes, up 1.02% month on month and 14.42% from the beginning of the year.

By the end of December, the 24 key power plants in Shanxi maintained coal inventory of 6.94 million tonnes in total, up 13.40% month on month and enough to cover 25 days.

The daily coal supply to these power plants averaged 222,000 tonnes in December, up 8.45% month on month, while their average daily consumption rose 8.25% month on month to 200,800 tonnes; the total coal supply rose 12.05% month on month to 6.88 million tonnes in the same month.

Coal Exports

Shanxi exported 28,700 tonnes of coal in December, decreasing 58.94% month on month but up 47.44% year on year. Total exports in 2013 amounted to 1.20 million tonnes, down 33.13% year on year.
