China’s wind power generating capacity will hit 100 GW by the end of this year, hitting the target set by policymakers a year ahead, thanks to robust development in the first half of this year, state media reported.

More than 7 GW of wind power generating capacity was connected to the state grid by the end of June 2014, representing an increase of 30.37% year on year, sources learned from an industrial expo opened in Beijing on October 22.

As of end-August this year, total wind power installed capacity had reached 83 GW, said Zhu Ming, one senior official with National Energy Administration, during the meeting.

The wind power sector generated 134.9 TWh of electricity in China last year, accounting for 2.52% of the total power output, compared to only 0.38% in 2008. It has become the country's third-largest source of electricity since 2012, following thermal power and hydropower, said Zhu.

The Chinese government has increased its support to the green sector through subsidies and tax breaks in a bid to boost the use of non-fossil fuel to reduce pollution and address global climate change.

China aims to increase wind power installed capacity to 200 GW by 2020, making it occupy more than 5% of the total power output, according to Zhu.
