Import of coking coal from Mongolia has been resumed at Takeshiken border crossing in northwestern China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, with the first batch totaling 500 tonnes arrived late last week, local media reported.
The coal was imported by Xinjiang Mengke Energy Technology Co., Ltd, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-listed Mongolia Energy Corporation (MEC), from the latter’s Khushuut Coal Mine in Khovd province, western Mongolia.
Xinjiang Mengke Energy has completed construction on the first phase project of a 3-million-tonne coal washing plant at Takeshiken border crossing, with capacity at 1.5 million tonnes per annum.
The company plans to start trial operation of coal washing to further improve coal quality, when the total imports reach 5,000 tonnes.
Mongolia Energy Corporation owns 3.4 billion tonnes of coking coal resources at Khushuut Coal Mine. It imported 189,000 tonnes of coking coal from the Mongolian mine in 2012.
