Shaanxi, China’s third largest coal production base, has unveiled the first batch of coal mines to be eliminated this year, to further improve safety record, according to a document released by the provincial government on February 16.

The province aimed to directly shut 10 mines in Yulin, Xianyang, Ankang and Shangluo cities and consolidate another two mines in Yulin, the document said.

Total production capacity of these coal mines amount to around 5 million tonnes per annum, showed the coal mines capacity database developed by industry consultant Fenwei Energy Consulting.

The county-level governments would be responsible for the elimination work, and these 12 mines should stop operation since the issuing of the document, it said.

Shaanxi produced a total 510.91 million tonnes of raw coal in 2014, up 3.63% from the previous year, said the Shaanxi Provincial Development and Reform Commission in January.
